About 4-Tertiary Butylphenol
Source:   Author:

PTBP is a type of high purity alkylphenol manufactured from phenol and isobutylene using DIC's proprietary techniques. It is used as a molecular weight modifier for polycarbonate resin and as a raw material in synthetic resins such as phenolic resins. In order to respond to various applications, DIC sells regular grade "PTBP" and special grade "PTBP" with the amount of impurities held to the absolute minimum.
Major Applications

Molecular weight: 150.2 / CAS No.: 98-54-4 / CSCL: 3-503 / UN No.: 3077 / UN Class: 9

• Oil-soluble phenolic resins
Phenolic resins can be obtained by heating and condensing PTBP and formaldehyde with acids such as hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, oxalic acid, acetic acid, or in the presence of alkalis such as ammonia, caustic potash, caustic soda.
This phenolic resin is an oil-soluble phenolic resin that dissolves in organic solvents, drying oils, and rubber, and by heating and co-condensation with these materials, it yields an oil-based varnish with superior water resistance and weather resistance that can be used as a useful coating such as an outdoor enamel, floor varnish, ship-bottom paint, or insulating varnish.

• Polycarbonate resins
DIC produces PTBP for polycarbonate resins refined to a high purity and it can be used as a molecular weight modifier for polycarbonate resins.
In particular, it has a superb effect in low molecular weight polycarbonate resins for optical applications.
